One of the main reasons couples choose Joshua Tree National Park for their elopement is the stunning natural beauty. The park is home to a diverse array of landscapes, from vast desert plains to rugged mountains and rocky outcrops. The iconic Joshua trees, with their twisting branches and distinct silhouette, add an ethereal touch to the scenery. Whether you choose to have your ceremony among the Joshua trees or with the backdrop of a stunning rock formation, the natural beauty of the park will create a truly unforgettable setting for your special day.
For my fellow adventurers, the park is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, stargazing, and more. You can make your elopement a multi-day adventure, exploring the park’s hidden gems and immersing yourself in its unique ecosystem. From exploring hidden oases to climbing to the top of a panoramic viewpoint, Joshua Tree National Park offers endless possibilities for creating unforgettable memories. Personally, Joshua Tree has a special place in my heart as my partner and I met in the town of Joshua Tree (just outside the national park).
One of the other reasons I love Joshua Tree National Park as an elopement destination is the surrounding quirky, eclectic towns. The area offers a plethora of funky art installations and lively thrift stores, creating a unique atmosphere. The locals represent a fascinating blend of LA expatriates, artists, adventurous rock climbers, and self-sufficient desert dwellers who have carved out a life in this unique environment.
Many find their way here, but few make it home. Even when we are off adventuring in other incredible destinations, a part of my heart is always in Joshua.
Planning your elopement adventure in Joshua Tree National Park can quickly become overwhelming, but thats what I’m here for. Here’s a collection of steps to guide you through the planning process and create an unforgettable, liberating, and stress-free experience tailored just for you.
Personally, I’d recommend eloping in Joshua Tree National Park between February-April or October-early December. Let me explain why!
Spring is a gorgeous time of year with an abundance of desert flowers, which makes it particularly beautiful. Temperatures will be a comfortable 70-85°F (21-29°C) for the high, but nights may dip down to 40°F (5°C) so bringing layers for warmth is necessary. Although few and far between, something to keep in mind during the spring is the possibility of desert rain.
The summers in Joshua Tree are typically scorching. Highs can often reach 100°F (37°C) with limited shade, plus the destination attracts a surge of tourists during the summer! If you do choose a summer date, consider opting for weekday ceremonies at sunrise or sunset to evade the sweltering heat and enjoy the best lighting conditions. As an added bonus, a sunrise ceremony will generally ensure privacy from the standard summer crowds.
Fall is my favorite time in Joshua Tree. An October or November date is perfect for those who like warmer temperatures but don’t want to battle the summer crowds. You can enjoy weather that is still pretty warm during the day reaching highs between 70-80°F (21-26°C), but it starts to cool down to an average of 50°F (10°C) in the evenings so packing layers for warmth is important!
While the winter months are the coldest months, it’s still warmer in Joshua Tree than the rest of the United States, so I would never say it’s a “bad” option. Highs are an average of 65°F (18°C), and generally, the nights stay above freezing temps. If you’re lucky, you’ll witness snow in the desert which always feels extra special.
You and your partner are creating a new core memory together (to say the very least), and choosing the right photographer is paramount to ensuring these memories are perfectly captured. The uniqueness of Joshua Tree’s desert lighting and scenery demands a professional who not only specializes in elopements but also possesses deep familiarity with the park. Trust me when I say you want someone who knows the prime locations, the best timing, and how to harness the natural ambiance of the locale. If you think I might be the right fit, I would love to hear from you!
Another thing to consider when choosing your Joshua Tree elopement photographer is the personal connection. After all, whomever you hire will be intimately involved in your day, witnessing your most private moments. It’s imperative that you feel an inherent comfort and trust with them. Their portfolio should resonate with your vision, encapsulating both your love story and the essence of Joshua Tree.
As a wedding photographer, I understand that couples often have their own vision and non-negotiables for their special day. That’s why it’s crucial to involve your photographer early on, so we can make sure your desires align with my availability and expertise. I offer more than just my camera skills – I’ll be your guide, assisting you throughout the planning process to ensure that your elopement in Joshua Tree is everything you’ve dreamed of. You don’t need to do this alone!
If you venture to Joshua Tree National Park, why not also arrange to have an adventurous engagement photo session captured as well? Just keep in mind that obtaining a special use permit is required for engagement photos in Joshua Tree National Park.
Although the choice of ceremony site must be made from the park-approved list, there is a multitude of stunning options available. After personally exploring the area, I have discovered several favorites that offer convenience in terms of location from the park entrance, the opportunity to escape the crowds, and a blend of unique rock formations to serve as the backdrop for your ceremony. These are my top three:
Set amidst the picturesque surroundings of Hidden Valley is a charming picnic area that can accommodate up to 35 guests. It strikes the perfect balance between intimacy and accessibility. Despite being a popular spot, there’s plenty of space to escape the crowds, explore the rocky outcroppings, and find some privacy.
An iconic location within the park, Cap Rock is an incredible ceremony backdrop. It’s best suited for elopements with a guest list of up to 25 people. Personally, it’s one of my favorite spots for an elopement because of the variety of interesting rock formations and large Joshua Trees.
Tucked away from the main highway, Split Rock is somewhat more secluded than the other 2 options on this list. This is a great option for couples expecting up to 15 attendees. Its rugged beauty is complemented by surrounded rocky hills.
If you’re looking for something beyond the three locations I suggested above, I’m happy to assist you in finding the perfect spot based on your wish list. With my firsthand experience and extensive knowledge of the park, I’m here to assist you with any location inquiries and help you plan your dream elopement. Feel free to ask me anything, and I’ll be more than happy to guide you along the way.
If you’re looking for alternative ceremony locations in Joshua Tree, there are nearby towns like Yucca Valley, Twentynine Palms, and Joshua Tree itself (the town, not the national park). You have a few options to consider. Airbnb or VRBO rentals provide a private and intimate setting, and some hosts may allow weddings. Reach out to the host to discuss your plans and group size (keep in mind that some hosts may have additional fees for hosting an event). Or, if you have a larger guest count, a traditional wedding venue might be a better option. I can suggest both traditional wedding venues and short term rental options like Airbnb based on what your vision is for your elopement.
To have your ceremony in the park, you will need to obtain a special use permit (regardless of your wedding size). Commitment ceremonies, legally binding marriages, and all other events within the park require a permit. This permit allows you to use a designated location within the park for your ceremony and ensures that you are aware of any restrictions or guidelines that need to be followed. The permit application process can take several weeks, so be sure to plan ahead and submit your application well in advance.
How do you apply for a special use permit? You need to fill out an NPS Form 10-930 Short Form and then email your application to Jeannie_Wilson@nps.gov. There is a $120 application fee.
The closest airport, Palm Springs (PSP), is just one scenic hour’s drive away. Checking flight prices to Palm Springs is totally worth it before exploring other airport possibilities. If you can snag a deal – it’s the best option!
Another option is flying into Los Angeles (LAX), which typically offers the best flight choices at more affordable rates. Just bear in mind that the drive from LAX to Joshua Tree usually takes between 2.5-4 hours, depending on traffic.
If you crave a smaller airport vibe, away from the hustle and bustle of LA traffic, checking flight prices to Ontario International Airport (ONT) is also worth considering. Although smaller, it still offers great flight options with similar pricing to LAX. The drive from ONT to Joshua Tree takes around 2 hours so you save a little time too!
Whichever airport you choose, renting a car is highly recommended for the ultimate personalized experience in this breathtaking destination. Don’t worry – I’m sharing lots of recommendations for what to fill your days with below!
There are various accommodation options around Joshua Tree, from quirky Airbnb homes to comfortable hotels. Joshua Tree National Park (and the surrounding towns) really do offer a range of accommodation options to suit every couple’s preferences and budget. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious desert retreat or a rustic camping experience, you’ll find plenty of choices in and around the park. Here are some options to consider:
1. Lodges and vacation rentals: There are plenty of beautiful lodges and vacation rentals in the surrounding area. From cozy cabins to stylish desert retreats, you’ll find a range of options to suit your preferences. Staying in a lodge or vacation rental provides a comfortable and convenient base for exploring Joshua Tree National Park and allows you to relax and unwind after your elopement. This is one of my favorite Airbnb options near Joshua Tree!
2. Glamping: If you’re looking for a more comfortable camping experience, consider glamping in Joshua Tree. Several glamping sites near the park offer luxurious accommodations such as safari tents, yurts, or Airstream trailers. These glamping sites provide all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay while still allowing you to connect with nature.
3. Camping: For couples who love the great outdoors, camping in Joshua Tree National Park is a popular choice. The park offers several campgrounds with varying amenities, from basic sites with no facilities to campgrounds with toilets and picnic tables. Keep in mind that campsites can fill up quickly, especially during peak season, so be sure to make a reservation well in advance.
We already discussed how important it is to book your elopement photographer early on in the process (so that I can help guide you!) but now it’s time to think about your other elopement vendors too. You might want to hire a florist, hair and makeup artist, or musician, or even book a classic car rental. My advice? Shop local! There are almost no chains in Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms. Support local and sustainable businesses when looking for your wedding vendors. If we work together, I’m happy to provide vendor recommendations too.
You’ll also need to book an officiant who will perform the ceremony. If you would like a friend or family member to officiate for you, it only takes 5 minutes to get ordained through Universal Life Church. And by the way – I’m ordained! So if you hire me as your elopement photographer, I can officiate for you!
For most couples who choose to elope in Joshua Tree, their wedding trip is more than just “one day”. Imagine rock climbing together on one of the 8000 climbing routes, or gazing at the stars hand in hand. During your visit, you can enjoy thrift shopping for vintage treasures, hiking through nature’s wonders, and immersing yourself in the area’s art installations. For a spiritual experience, attend a sound bath at the Integratron. And why not take to the skies with a breathtaking hot air balloon ride in nearby Temecula? Whether it’s ATV tours, riding in a classic car, or indulging in any of these extraordinary activities, your elopement in Joshua Tree National Park can (and will!) be a truly unforgettable adventure.
Another can’t-miss attraction? Pioneertown, the Western-themed community that used to be a 1940’s movie set. Think about how cool it would be to take your wedding photos there!
No matter where you’re from, you need to obtain a marriage license in the state where you elope. For those planning an elopement in Joshua Tree National Park, the nearest county clerk’s office is located in San Bernardino County, but all you need is a California marriage license which can be obtained from any county in the state (and can be purchased up to 90 days in advance). Fortunately for out-of-state couples, there is no waiting period for a marriage license in California but keep in mind that some counties will require an appointment. After your ceremony, your officiant is legally required to file your license within 10 days.
All the planning leads to this moment. All there is left for you to do is ENJOY it. If I’m your wedding photographer, I will be there to guide you and ensure you can remain present and soak up every single moment of your day. Get in touch with me here and let’s get started!
The cost of eloping in Joshua Tree Park can vary depending on the couple and their specific preferences. There are several factors to consider when budgeting for a Joshua Tree wedding. Additionally, an entrance fee of $30 per car is required, allowing access to the park for 7 days. Accommodation costs can vary based on choice and availability. It’s also important to consider the expenses of hiring a photographer, officiant, or any other vendors you may want to include in your special day.
While you don’t need to be fancy to elope in Joshua Tree National Park, if you want to elevate your elopement and make it feel like the true celebration it is, you’re welcome to bring:
The following items are not permitted into the park:
The National Park Service may change what they do or don’t allow at any time, so it’s best to double-check the NPS website before making any arrangements!
