For couples who want a unique ceremony in a setting that feels almost otherworldly, a black sand beach elopement is what you’re looking for.
I had the honor recently of photographing Sarah and Fox’s ceremony and elopement weekend throughout southern Iceland, and the photos we captured made it look and feel like a fantasy. I truly feel like it was one of the best experiences of my life (and work as a destination elopement photographer!).

To kick off Sarah and Fox’s elopement weekend, we started at the iconic Skógafoss waterfall for pre-ceremony photos. The scenery there is the perfect mix of hazy and lush, with the waterfall mist creating a dream-like atmosphere. We captured both beautiful posed photos and candids that perfectly showcase their love for each other.
One great thing about a black sand beach elopement in Iceland is that there’s so much beauty surrounding the area. On the way to the ceremony, we stopped by another waterfall that was just as epic as Skógafoss.
Once we got to Vik, we headed to Reynisfjara Beach, the famous black sand beach in Iceland. Known for its towering basalt columns and massive beach caves, it’s the perfect setting for an epic yet intimate ceremony. The memories we captured were unforgettable, and we were even lucky enough to spot some puffins along the beach!
The ceremony was perfectly timed for sunset, and the couple exchanged their vows right there on the beach.
The next day, the couple explored more of Iceland and headed to the Seljavallalaug outdoor pool to soak in the natural hot springs. As they celebrated their first day of being married, I captured some great shots of them hanging out, relaxing, and just enjoying being together.
If the photos so far aren’t proof enough, let me tell you why Iceland is such a great place for an elopement.
To start, Iceland’s dramatic landscapes make for unmatched photography. I can’t even take all of the credit for what we created together! Especially with a black sand beach elopement, there’s really nothing like it back in the U.S. Your elopement photos will feel just like true artwork (exactly what you deserve).
Though Iceland has become more of a tourist destination, it’s not nearly as crowded as other spots in Europe, making it perfect for couples. It’s easy to find a stunning yet private spot for your elopement ceremony, and you can count on an intimate celebration with each other if you know where to look.
Eloping in Iceland is already a unique experience, but especially for adventurous couples, there are so many memories you can make during your stay. If you’re celebrating all weekend or even spending your honeymoon there, you might have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights, experience the Midnight Sun, soak in natural hot springs, and enjoy beautiful hiking trails.
An Iceland elopement (whether you’re planning a black sand beach elopement or have another backdrop in mind) takes a bit of preparation, but it’s still an excellent option for a stress-free ceremony. With these tips, you’ll be there celebrating in no time:
Iceland can definitely get cold in the wintertime, but that’s also when you’ll see some of the most beautiful sights (like the Northern Lights!). Do some research and decide what makes sense for your elopement.
Even if you’re eloping, you still need a budget. With a destination wedding, you’ll spend on travel, accommodations, photography, activities, food, and more.
Iceland has so many stunning locations to choose from, including Skógafoss and Reynisfjara Beach. You can pick locations near waterfalls, beaches, canyons, glaciers, and mountains (in Iceland, you really have it all!).
For a destination elopement in Iceland, you’ll need to submit some documents to the Iceland Registry in advance. Check out my guide to getting married in Iceland to make sure you’re submitting everything necessary.
Like any international trip, there are a few logistics you’ll need to prep for. Traveling to and from Iceland is a great place to start, but also consider your accommodations, travel to your photo and ceremony locations, backup plans (weather can always be unpredictable, but that’s ok!), and activities.
This is my favorite step (obviously!). Capture your Iceland elopement and memories with a professional photographer. With my experience shooting elopements in Iceland and beyond, I can help you every step of the way! Contact me today so we can chat about your big day.
The last thing to do is enjoy! You’ll never forget a stunning elopement in Iceland, and I’d be honored to be there to capture it.
